Working as a member of a team, each child helps design and build a roller coaster for a marble to travel on (without falling off), that has at least one complete vertical loop using two half-sections of pipe insulation. Each team is given two half-sections of pipe insulation, duct tape, and a marble. As the children design and assemble their coasters they must first recognize that the marble has to have enough kinetic energy to successfully travel through the vertical loop.
Based on what they have learned in the marble vertical jump experience, they will need to adjust the upper end of the coaster so that the marble starts down its path at a point that is higher than the top of the vertical loop. This experience introduces children to the idea that energy can be transformed from one form to another, in this case from potential to kinetic energy.
This session emphasizes Engineering principles as a part of the STEAM curriculum standards.
